Tent City, Louisiana
I’ve been wondering what’s up the with sudden growth of the homeless population in the park outside of City Hall. Dorothy, a Tulane Medical student blogging at NOhomeless, went to talk to them. She reports that (surprise, surprise) they’re a combination of the mentally-ill, drug abusers who’ve been kicked out of other shelters, and hard-luck people who came to the city looking for work but not finding enough to pay the rent.
She has some photos of the homeless tent city at flickr, but no insight yet why the city has grown so recently. Could it be that we’re receiving people from other, colder places moving down here for the milder winters? (via)
